Yesterday saw the Association's annual visit to the School, with a goodly selection of members (and some non-members!) enjoying the occasion - some for the first time in 50 years. We were warmly welcomed by the newly-appointed Head Teacher Ben Corbett and his staff and shown the excellent facilities now available to the students, together with a brief description of the proposals currently in hand for the immediate future. Pix of the day (courtesy of Maurice Barker) can be seen here. The School website has a lot of information here.

Further to the previous entry the visit in question took place from 30th September to 3rd October 2016. Within days of the event one of the participants, Ian Mather, provided a report but it went mysteriously absent and has never been published - until now. Ian has provided a replacement copy - it can be seen here, as a .pdf.

After a visit by the Association's Military Interest Group to the Lochnagar Crater on the Somme battlefield, the Executive council arranged for the funding of a memorial Plaque in remembrance of the 59 Old Boys who are known to have been lost in WW1. The plaque (pictured here) has now been installed at the Crater, notwithstanding the mis-spelling of Bazentin. The Crater itself is pictured here.

David Clarke (1948-1955 and now living somewhere in darkest Cumbria) has recently renewed contact with his old form mates. In addition to some (so-far-brief) reminiscing he has provided a series of photos from the halcyon years 1954 and 1955 as well as some other items of interest. See his page in the Gallery. Although his memory has performed magnificently regarding putting names to faces there are still a number of lacunae - any help gratefully received!

The Association's AGM took place on Friday 5th May at Fulwood Conservative Club and was followed by the customary hot pot supper. The event was not as well attended as in previous years, for the ever-more-normal reasons of ill-health and a decreasing membership. Even so an interested congregation saw Jim Goring invested as President by Past-President John Whalley and enjoyed a convivial evening. Pix, from Maurice as usual, can be seen here.

(Please note: the funeral of Ronnie Foreman, referred to below, did not take place as advertised because of the illness of his son. A new date is still to be notified.)

Further to the death of Bill Heane announced below John Whalley has sent us the following brief note about Bill's life.

"After leaving school in 1938, Bill joined the RAF with the aspiration of becoming a pilot. During initial training in Canada he shocked his flying instructor by only just pulling out of a spin before landing safely! The advice, now, was for him to concentrate on becoming a navigator, which he did with great relish. He joined Bomber Command and the Lancaster Pathfinder Squadron 582 and completed 57 operational missions, mainly over Germany, with the same 'lucky' skipper and crew! After demob. he joined the family firm in Preston, WS. Heane, and enjoyed a number of leisure pursuits including sailing his boat Kingfisher from Glasson Dock, active family holidays and walking, He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church Choir until last year. He leaves his wife, Margaret, whom he met when she was a midwife at Sharoe Green Hospital, son David and daughter Janet together with five grandchildren".

The first update of the New Year is a photograph (resurrected, having been misplaced recently) of the School's ATC squadron at camp in 1944. The camp was at Calveley, Cheshire, and was held from 2nd - 9th September. The group pictured includes members of squadrons other than the PGS (2148) squadron. The individuals named are believed to be all the PGS members - the colours have no significance other than to connect names to faces. Any corrections gratefully received. See here.

Military Service records - a database of the military service records and other appropriate data of old boys and staff during the two world wars, other conflicts and the National Service period has been assembled by Alick Hadwen. This includes information about individuals killed in action, grave locations, honours won and the like. There is more info out there in the world, just waiting to be identified. If you have any of it please let the Association know.

The database can be accessed here.

The building in Moor Park Avenue, officially opened in 1913 as the new home of Preston Grammar School, following its move from Cross Street, is now home to Moor Park High School and 6th Form College. The Association maintains close links with the High School. Likewise Keith Nightingale (a former Association President) has now retired as Chair of the Board of Governors after several years of service but remains as a Governor, with Tony Olivine (another former President) and Ian Yates also representing the Association.
